Capri and its castle
Owing to its strategic and dominating position, it is believed to be one of the twelve villas built by Emperor Tiberius and the most important one after Villa Jovis.
It is located at the only point of the island from which one can admire the Faraglioni, the Gulf of Naples, the open sea towards Sicily and the African continent.
From its origins as a Greek temple dedicated to Neptune deity and subsequently a Tiberius Villa, it was transformed before the year 1.000 to a quadrangular fortified building with embattled walls and two towers.

A huge construction sitting on the mountain of Castiglione, the castle fortress dominates the city of Capri, its piazzetta, City hall and the other most important strategic places.
At a time, at its middle section there was a Chapel dedicated to the Virgen of Libera, up to this days very much venerated for many years by the Capresi since the time of the incursions by Saracens raids led by Khair-ed-Bin, the legendary Barbarossa as well to other epidemics and misfortunes that affected their everyday life.

During the early 1700 the castle and the Chapel was transformed in a gun-powder storage facility which was used by the English troop to combat the French army commanded by Murat located on the other half of the island as it is Anacapri.
Later on the place was excavated by Austrian architect Hadrawa who took substantial pieces or remains to the Caserta palace that was being built at the time.
In 1912 the complete hill and castle ruins were bought by the Societa Fondiaria Italiana. Then the lot was acquired by Baron Alberto Fassini and subsequently in 1950 by Duke Roberto Caracciolo di San Vito,
counselor at the Italian Embassy in Paris who renovated the house to its current appearance.
The property has been in possession by the Di Mase family since 1975
